What is folic acid anyway?
Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin also known as vitamin B11. What does folic acid do? The substance contributes to the production of white and red blood cells. Furthermore, the substance is involved in the development of the spinal cord and the brain and the formation of RNA and DNA. It is therefore important for the unborn child at a very early stage.
How much per day is needed?
What should the folic acid value be? Every body is different, but there is a recommended daily intake of vitamins. This is based on the averages. The recommended daily intake for folic acid in the EU is 200 µg. Many Dutch people do not meet the standard and in the Netherlands it is a bit higher, namely 300 µg. Pregnant women need even more, namely 400 µg. This also applies to breastfeeding.
Is an excess of folic acid dangerous?
Did you know that the maximum amount of folic acid for adults is set at no less than 1000 µg? It therefore seems that too much folic acid is not dangerous. Even with a normal diet in which a lot of extra folic acid is used, this number is usually not achieved. But is it as harmless as it seems? There is a difference between folic acid from your diet and folic acid from supplements.
Nutrition or supplements?
When you actually only take the substance out of your diet, there is no mention of negative effects. In that case you would say that an upper limit is not even necessary. However, negative effects have been observed with supplements.
What are the side effects of too much folic acid?
If the folic acid level is too high due to supplementation, then you have to be careful. If you suffer from a B12 deficiency, it is less easy to detect it. This is due to the substance folic acid contained in the supplements. Side effects of too much folic acid are not known.
